Worms for axolotls
The short answer: earthworms are the staple food for axolotls — more nutritionally complete than pellets or bloodworms alone. Juveniles eat daily; adults eat every 2-3 days. Red wigglers suit smaller axolotls; European nightcrawlers suit adults.
Red wigglers vs nightcrawlers
| Red wigglers | European nightcrawlers | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Smaller, thinner | Larger, meatier |
| Best for | Juveniles and smaller axolotls | Adults |
| Handling | Easy to portion whole | Often cut into halves or thirds |
Both are earthworms and both work as a staple. Start with red wigglers for a young axolotl and move up to nightcrawlers as it grows. Some axolotls have a clear preference — if yours refuses one, try the other before assuming it won't eat worms at all.
How many, how often
| Age | How often | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Juvenile (under ~4 inches) | Daily | As much as eaten in a few minutes; small pieces |
| Subadult (4-6 inches) | Daily to every other day | Half a nightcrawler or equivalent |
| Adult (6+ inches) | Every 2-3 days | 1-2 larger earthworms per serving |
Cut large worms to fit your axolotl's mouth — halves or thirds with clean scissors. Judge portions by body condition: from above, a healthy axolotl's belly is roughly as wide as its head. If it regurgitates, the portion was too big; cut back and check water parameters.
If your axolotl won't eat worms
Refusal is common at first, especially for axolotls raised on other foods. Wiggle a worm piece in front of its face with feeding tongs to mimic live movement, and keep offering worm pieces alongside foods it already accepts. Most juveniles come around within a week of steady exposure. Persistent refusal beyond a couple of weeks, or refusal combined with lethargy, is worth a water test and a vet visit.
Keeping feeder worms
Use worms from a chemical-free source — never garden worms from treated soil. Rinse worms before feeding, and remove uneaten pieces promptly: rotting food fouls the water fast. Store spare worms cool, with damp bedding, following the farm's care sheet.
